Calibrating the software to your patient display

Monitor calibration

Letter Size Calibration

Its essential that your calibration is set correctly to ensure consistent VA measurements. During the initial setup as you go through the setup screens, you will need to input the height and the width of a plus sign. This is input in millimetres. It is imperative to measure these heights very accurately, and they need to be measured on the “PATIENT VIEWING SCREEN”, and NOT on your laptop, unless you are using your laptop as the patient viewing screen. This measurement tells Spectrum about your patient viewing monitor, as well  as the monitors resolution.

As you continue through the setup screens, please input “6000” as your patient viewing distance. This might not be the patient viewing distance, but we need to check that the letter sizes are correct, and this is the standard we use.

Scroll your mouse wheel till the 6/60 line on the “Logmar Chart” is displayed. You might need to Randomize the letters till you get a letter with a straight vertical limb Now go to your patient viewing monitor and measure the height of the letter on the screen, and the limb height should be 87.5 mm high. If this is the height of the letter, then your setup is correct. If the size is not correct, recheck the height and width in millimetres that you measured on the plus sign. You now need to go to the “Options Screen” on the top menubar, and select “Setup Wizard” and when you get to the screen where you are required to input the “room length”, then input your correct room length that you measure from your pheropter or trial frame when placed before a patients face, to your Patients viewing monitor. In order to guarantee accurate and consistent VA measurements, it is essential to carry out this exercise correctly.

In summary:

  1. Select Options from the top menubar
  2. Select setup wizard
  3. Go To “Step 2 of 4”
  4. Enter 6000 as your room length, and check the tickbox “using a mirror” if you are using one, leave unchecked if not.
  5. On “Step 3” select the Patients screen from the number displayed on the screen click “next”
  6. Measure in Millimetres the height and width of the large plus sign, (ON THE PATIENT MONITOR)  and enter the values
  7. Click “Finish”
  8. Select a 6/60 letter on the VA screen, (Patient Monitor) and measure the height of the letter
  9. Should be 87.5 mm if not, redo height and width of plus sign
  10. If it is 87.5, go back to step 2 and enter Room Length from the patient to the Monitor, and if using a Mirror, ADD this to the length from the mirror to the patient monitor., and check the Mirror tick box on the room length screen
  11. Select “finish” your letter size is correctly calibrated

Congratulations, Your Letter size is now correctly calibrated

Calibrate When Using a Mirror

Go through the normal Letter Calibration process, as above and when you have the limb height of the 6/60 letter correct on the monitor with the room length set as 6000, then go back to the setup wizard where you are required to enter the actual room length, from your pheropter or trial frame to the mirror, then add the distance from the mirror to the monitor above the patients head check the tick box that says “are you using a mirror” Its essential that your calibration is set correctly to ensure consistent VA measurements.

Congratulations, Your Letter size is now correctly calibrated and setup for use with a mirror.

New Practice re-calibrate

When moving to a new practice or test room, or if you are screening at a school, or if you have changed your “patient viewing monitor”, you will need to check and Letter Calibration process. as above

When screening at a school it will only be necessary to adjust your room length to the length you are using at the school.

As a refresher, here is the process:- Go to the “Options Screen” on the top menubar, and select “Setup Wizard” and when you get to the screen where you are required to input the “room length”, then input the distance you are using at the school from the pupil to the screen. In order to guarantee accurate and consistent VA measurements, it is essential to carry put this exercise correctly.

When returning to your practice, it is recommended that you run through the Letter Calibration process as above to just be sure of your measurements. If you are using a different monitor at the school, it will be necessary to go through the entire setup process on the monitor the pupils are viewing, as this might be different resolution to the monitor in your test room, or if they are viewing the laptop monitor directly it will be necessary to once again go through the Letter Calibration process as above, and then you will need to go through the process again on your return to your test room
